Dr. Basil Al Zeerah, M.B.B.S, F.R.C.S.(Canada):

Dr. Basil was born in Wales, UK on 14th July 1965 of an Austrian mother and Bahraini father. He attended English-language private schools in Bahrain, receiving 9 GCE 'O' levels in 1982 from the University of London.

He attended the Arabian Gulf University where he received his M.B.B.S. degree in 1989. He received the highest score in his group at the Bahrain evaluating examination conducted by the Ministry of Health in 1990.

Following his internship in 1990, he spent a year as a junior resident in Ophthalmology at the Salmaniya Medical Centre, Bahrain before travelling to receive proper accredited residency training in Canada.

In Canada he took and passed the Canadian Evaluating Examination as well as the United States Medical Licensing examination parts 1 and 2 (1992). He received Canadian employment authorisation to work in Canada in 1992 and worked in Ottawa Eye Institute, Ottawa Civic Hospital and the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario till December 1996. He worked directly under some of the most eminent professors of ophthalmology in North America, including authors of several of the American Academy of Ophthalmology monographs.

Of note, he received an unusual certificate of great proficiency in Cataract surgery in August 1996. After completing the accredited Ottawa residency program, he was recommended to attend the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada examination in ophthalmology which he passed on the first sitting.

In June 1997 he was awarded the title of Specialist in ophthalmology by the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada. In August 1997 he was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, which entitled him to practice as a consultant in Canada and the United States.

He served the International Hospital of Bahrain as Consultant and Head of department from November 1997 until December 1999. During his stay at the hospital he enjoyed a good reputation as a caring and capable ophthalmic physician and surgeon, specialising in phacoemulsification cataract surgery.

Following his decision to leave the International Hospital, he was asked to advise a new hospital in Abu Dhabi on the setting up of a modern eye unit. He later worked as an independent consultant in Bahrain at a private clinic for three months to get a further evaluation of the levels and standards of private eye care in Bahrain.

He then set up the Al-Basil Eye Clinic in Hoora, designing the clinic layout, computer network, choosing the software and equipment. The clinic has now been running since the very beginning of the year 2000.

The standards that are built into the clinic are based on the high levels of training and care that Dr. Basil practised for 5 years in Canada and for 12 years now in Bahrain.
